BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The uaual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Chambers last (Tuesday) evening, His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. Nathan) presiding, and the following gentlemen having taken the usual statutory declaration, took their seats at the Council table: —Councillors G-. ] Carson, T. D. Cummins, A. Hatrick, P. D. j Hogg, F. B. Jackson, J. Laird, S. H. Mftnson, and F. M. Spurdle • the only absentee being Mr A. J. Parsons, who ib not at present in the colony. the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and the bank books, etc., as placed on the table showed a oredit balance of £1018 4s. The Town Clerk Btated that a complaint had been lodged against Mr E. Wright by two ratepayers for cutting down six trees in Nixon-street. —Mr Wright, who was present,did not deny the charge, but stated that he did not do it from malicious intent. He hoped the Counoil would overlook the offence, (more particularly as he thought he was doing the trees good. — A discussion ensued, the genaral tenor of the remarks being to the effect that the matter was not one calling for the intervention of Councillors, but rather for the executive officers to deal with in the usual manner, and this course was accepted. ' The date of signing the Burgess 801 l was thon considered, and it was decided that it should be fixed for noon on Tuesday next, a special meeting being called for that purpose. An application was received on behalf of the Trustees of the Rifle Eango for leave to cut about 40 young gum trees at Mr J. W. Jackson's plantation for the purpose of putting up a fence,etc. — On the motion of Cr Hatrick, seconded by Cr Jackson, it was decided that leave be granted Eubjeet to the approval of the Foreman of Works. The draft of the Kre Brigade Bill was forwarded and it was ordered to lie on the tahle. Councillors Cummins and Carson expressed themselves as decidedly opposed to the measure. It waa decided, on the motion of Cr Caraon, seconded by Or Manson, to allow Mts (" Granny ") Dalton the use of an unocoupied house near the Eacecourse (known as Doble's) at the pleasure of the CounoD. The following Committees were appointed :— Finance Committee — Councillors Hatrick Jackson, and Hogg (with the Mayor) ; on the motion of Cr Carson, seconded by Cr laird. Water Supply Committee— Councillors Laird, Spurdle, Caraon, Cummins and Parsons ; on the motion of Cr Hatrick, seconded by Cr Jackson. LeaseboldsCommittee — OouneillorsLaird, Manson and, Cnmmins ; on the motion of Cr Carson, seconded by Cr Hatrick. Eiver Bank Committee— Councillors Jackson, Manson, Parsons, and Laird j ofi the motion of Cr Carson, seconded by Cr Hatrick: In connection with the extra lighting in some of the streets (resolution passed at last Council meeting) it was decided after a desultory discussion, on the motion of Or laird seconded by Or Manson, that three iron posts be taken for the gas lamps and wooden ones for the others. ! Tho Foreman of Worka report, as read, | was received and adopted, on the motion j of Cr laird seconded by Cr Carson. Or Hfttriek drew attention to a paragraph appearing in the Hbbaxd re painting highwater mark on one of the cylinders of the Town Bridge, and the matter was left in tho hands of the Mayor. The Inspector of Nuisances report, as read, was received on the motion of Cr Hatriok, seconded by Or Cummins. The report stated that taking the sanitary state of the Borough as a whole there was nothing to complain of. Cr Hatrick gave notice of motion as follows :— That the resolution re declining to grant any further water closet connection be rescinded. That all present and future water closet connections pay an annual rent of 265, to go to a special fund for improving the present or perfecting a proper drainage system. A letter was received from Mr R. Openshaw, making further application for drain. The letter was received. Cr Manson brought under the notice of the Council the advisability of making a fence round the convenience under tho Bridge, and he moved, That the Eoremaa be instructed to make any repairs necessary, This was seconded by Cr Laird and carried. It waß resolved to grant Cr Mans&n's application for some loads of gravel to be he put down on the foreshore at the back of his premises, damaged by the late flood, the motion being moved by Or Hatrick and seconded by Or Cummins.

On tho motion of Cr laird, seconded by Or Hatriek, it -was resolved that the Foreman of Workß report on the state of the footpathß at next meeting. Accounts amounting to £261 16s 3d were passed for payment, Tho Council then resolved itself into a Domain Board, and the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr laird, seconded by Mr Manson, that the Foreman of Works be empowered to employ an extra man on Domain works, to give effect to previous resolutions. It was resolved that Messrs Carson, Cummins, and Laird be a Domain Committee, and the statement of receipts and expenditure, as read, was placed on the table.

Accounts amounting to £Q 12a 4d were passed for payment on the motion of Mr Carson, seconded by Mr Manson, and the meeting adjourned.

An unusually large number of spectators assembled at Fordell on Saturday lost to witness the football match with the Maoris against the local team. J. Cameron kicked off for Fordell (the wind heing in their favour), and after a lot of loose play on both sides F. Harrison, by a brilliant ran, got the ball over the Maoris' live. The kick was entrusted to G\ Marshall, but he failed to convert. F, Harrison soon again got a try for Fordell, which was not converted into a goal. In the second spell tho Maoris were determined to score but wore unsuccessful after several brilliant attempts to get through with the ball. J. Cameron obtained a try for the local team but Marshall failed to kick a goal. J. Cameron, Marshall, W. Euscoe, and McGregor for Fordell, and Kangi, Meta, and MoDonnell, for Matatera, played well,
