Major Churchward, a member of the Commission which inquired into the explosion of the gun at Queenscliffe, has forwarded an individual opinion to the Government, in which he contends that if anyone was to blame it was the Victorian Government for purchasing and using the breach-block mechanism of a certain type before it had been properly tested and proved to be a success in England.
A syndicate has cornered the Bearhill gold shares, fully seventeen thousand of which have been overiold utjpriees ranging from 15s to 30s. Many leading brokers have been entrapped into heavy losses.
The report of the Labour Federation Committee presented to Congress attributes the defeat of the labour party in the recent ■tnke to the ineffective power of the Union to take concerted action, and the inadequacy of a common! defence fund to meet the demands upon it.
