London, December B.—The will of the late W. Westgarth has been proved at under £145,000. He leave £2100 to charities, and £18,000 in other minor legacies. Petech Dochling and Co., Australian merchanti of Aldermanbury, E.C., have failed, with liabilities of £60,000, and assets £270,000. They attribute their bankruptcy to the depression of, trade with Australia, the action of Victoria in raising Customs dues, and losses in Sydney business. Three months bills are quoted at 3| per cent, English wheat market is steady. Continental shows a general advance, and the American market is also steady. Forward business is active, and foreign arrivals large. Tallow—medium mutton, 255; beef, 235. N.Z. Hemp—£2B to £28 10s. Capetown, December 7.—The R.M.S. Aorangi sailed for New Zealand to-day.
Sydney, December 9. — Engineers on the intercolonial steamers demand that' the chief engineer shall be absolute in the engine-room, and the captain of ship shall not be permitted to interfere with him in any way. Onwors decline to tolerate such an arrangement, and it is feared a difficulty will arise.
