(Special to Herald.) WELLINGTON. October 8. Major Campbell has, after 35 years service, resigned his position as Clerk of the House of Representatives and Clerk of Parliament. (Per United Press Association). The question of raising the Eoranui has been deferred until the Southern insurance offices interested have been consulted. It is expected that the barque Willie McLaren, wrecked in Worser's Bay on Saturday, will be sold along with the cargo where she lies., AUCKLAND. October 8. The Diocesan Synod commenced its sittings to-day. Bishop Cowie, in his opening speech, referred to the social evil question, saying it is by the increase of the same spirit of brotherhood, which is the essence oE true Christianity, that other social evils mUBt be checked and suppressed. Of these there are some that it "is shame even to Bpeak of" as prevalent in a Christian community. "I speak advisedly in declaring my earnest conviction that more harm than good is done by familarising young men and women with details of such vices through communications made to the public journals of our city. Indeed, the only justification of such action, it appears to me, is the personal ministration of those who thus offend in endeavouring to rescue those that have fallen, and their preparedness to provide a remedy for the abominations they expose. Purity in this respect, like the grace of humility is more Burely cherished by silent effort than by public discussion."
