SYNOPSIS OF PREVIOUS CHAPTERS.

Chaptbbs Land IT.— Mrs Sidehottom, whose maiden name was Pennycomequick, and her son Captain Pennycomequiok, who had taken the name by special license, are sitting together considering ways and means. With ambitious notions and extravagant tastes she finds it difficult to live on the £400 annually, which is hor income. Both she and her son are reckoning upon tho possiblo fortuno that may he theirs on the death of a wealthy relative, Jeremiah Pennycomequick (half-brother io Mrs Sidebottom), whom they have just entertained at dinner but who is disgusted with their overdone professions of interest in his welfare. Living with him is a niece, Salome Cuswortb, one of two sisters, the elder one having left his roof to marry a French manufacturer. Mr Pennycomequick gradually becomes drawn towards the fatherless Salome, and something of a tenderer feeling springs up within his breast. A casual joke from Captain Pennycomequick with reference to Salome and himself reveals to him his heart, and when he meets her in his own home after the Sidebottom banquet, he dare not meet her eyes.
