Bothsho and her son are reckoning upon the possiblo fortune that may be theirs on the death of a ■wealthy relative, Jeremiah Pennycomequick (half-brother to Mrs Sidebottom), whom they havo just entertained at dinner but i ■who is disgusted with their overdono professions of interest in his welfare. Living ! with him is a niece, Saloino Cusworth, one j of two sisters, tho elder one having left his roof to marry a Frenoh manufacturer. Mr Pennycomequick gradually becomes drawn towards the fatherless Salome, and something of a tenderer feeling springsup within his breast. A casual joke from Captain Pennycomequick with reference to Salome and himself reveals to him his heart, and when he meets her in his own homo after the Sidebottom banquet, ho dare not meet j her eyes.
