REVIEW.
Modern Slavery and Civilisation by Leonard Pozzi, of Switzerland, who emigrated to Victoria in 1853 and to New Zealand in 1868. Piico sixpence. Mr Pozzi deals with tho Protect-on and Freotrade question in the form of a dialogue, and whether he puts tho Freetrade side of tho argument a3 well as freetrading would desire, he places Pro 1 tcction in a light which leaves nothing more to bo desired. The Freetrader askB — '"What is the cause of thero being so many unemployed in this flno colony, when wo export SO largely wool, grain, meat, timber, &c ? To v.hich the Prot3ctionist replies — "Because tho balance of trade is groatly against the colony. Since tho colony was founded we have imported 42J million pounds worth moro than we haye produced, and if wo deduct tho amount of exports bolonging to absentees (whom I do not consider of much good or boneflt to tho colony) then the above figure 3 would be nearly doubled." Taking the whole of tho argument, we consider that Protection has received a very able defence at the hands of Mr Pozzi. The author resides at Chrislchurch, and is connected with the Knights of Labour Society, the rulos of which body aro published at tho end of the d ; alogue.

Wo publish in another column a roply to tho latest pieco of politic il spito that has been copied into ourcontemporary's columns. It looks as though nothing is too contemptible to bo used for their ends in trying to damago a political opponent.
