NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.
. «- ■ (BY TELEGRAPH— OWN CORRESPONDENT-) Donedin, M»rch 6. The North Island shootists took £449 10s of the prize money at the N.Z R.A. meeting and the Southerners £444, Concerning the next year's meeting the Star's special reporter at Oamaru says: — "The next year's gathering at B'enheim is certain to be looked forward to with an unusual amount of interest for all the competitors ' will then be armed with the same weapon \ (the Martini-Henri) and as fiera will be only one champion belt its winner will be entitled to bo regarded aa the champion shot of the colony. I learn that it is intended to have thirty targets erected, and as a spien1 did range can be obtained Capt Sommerville , is confident that the meeting will be easily pot through within the week. Tho distance will be increased to SOOyds, but this being in the nature of an experimental gathering with the new rifle, there will be no 900 yds range. The question of tho continuance of the standing and kneeling match has been • related to the incoming council, to whom I would suggest that it be retained on the programme, but that it be not allowed to count in the belt aggregates, Another difhcult matter that the council will have to decide is the disposition of the present rifle belt, a new belt being now provided 1 for both carbines and rifleß. The sugges- , tion has been made, and it has commended itself to the ex-champions present at the ! hto meeting, that the past holders should . be invited to meet at Blenheim next year, and that to their scores, say, in the three matches now counting for the Union Com1 pany's cup, be added to the scores made in an additional match, the highest segregate to become the permanent owner of the belt. The meeting of such excellent shots as Lieutenant Skinner, Corporal Hutchineon, Privates Kennedy, Churton, Willocks, aud Bellinger, Sergeant Remington, Captain Whito, Major Purnell, Lieutenant 1 Okey, and possibly Captain Psynter to 1 take part in a special fixture would lend > an additional attraction to the meeting, and the result would be looked forward to with ■ the greatest interest.
