A LIBERAL ACTION.

(Manawatv Times). It is with sincere pleasure that we learn from Mr Lingard, the agent of the National Mutual Life Asaooiation of Australasia, that the Direofcors of that Sooiety have deoi ded to pay a hundred pounds to the TOdow of oir lamented .townsman, Mr nil liam Arthur Collins, whose early death it w as our painful duty to record a short tlm c ago. It appears that the young fellow, abont twelve months since, insured his life In the National Mutual for two hundred pounds, ont was unfortunately taken ill during the B *y« of Jgraoe usually allowed for the pay. rntdt of the premium, and the second pre""am was not paid at, the date of his death, By whioh time the polioy had lapsed. Under these circumstances no claim Jpnld, of course, be made on the Association; but upon the whole matter being laid before the Directors, they, with a wise and Judicious liberality, deoided to present the widow of the deceased with a hundred pounds. To her and her young child such kindneaiasthis will be appreciated, and we venture to think that the many polioySpiders which the National Mutual has in this district will view with pleasure and ■•Jl'fwtJon the enlightened generosity Whfoh co evidently oharaoterises the management of the office of whioh they are members. For ourselves, we heartily wish the Society an even larger measure of success than they h»ve already experienced, for here is an instance, not of a narrow conaneration of technicalities, but of a broad and humane interpretation of the sacred Obligations whioh an assurance society owes to the widows and the orphans of its , members: Captain Edwin telegraphs as follows :— Nortn-etst to north and west gale and farther fall of glass and heavy sea, The cricket match between Vernon'a team and the combined Australian eleven ■■ resulted in a win for the former by an .innings and 78 runs. The Englishmen made 292 runs in their innings. The Auckland Star lays that a rumour ii current that dismissals will be very - numerous, and consequently there is a fettling of great uneasiness prevailing ftmongat Civil servants in Wellington .
