Mr R, T. Wheeler, of the Bankruptcy Gazette, Is on a visit to Wanganui just now. We may remind our readers again of "Under the Palms," at the Wesley an Church Schoolroom this evening. Admission one shilling. Captain Edwin telegraphs at 11 a.m, aa follows :— Bad weather approaching between north and east and southeast. Glass further fall, and heavy rain within ten hoursFrom a remark let fall yesterday by Mr Handley, we gather that the Waitotara County Council intends ti oppose tho Harbour Rating Bill by passing a resolution to that effect at its next meeting. Tho skating rink ia a great institution just now, the natives especially patronising it at all hours of the day and night. To-morrow evening Mr Alexander will hold a half-mile tournament for Maoris only, when there should be some good fun. A special meeting of the Waoganui County Council was held yesterday, when there wore present— Crs Poison (chair). Mason, Parker, Dt Blyfche, J. Blythe, and McDonald. It was resolved that a rate of |d in the £ on all rateable property within the county be struck, payable on the 10th June, 1886. A buggy sent from Dunedin to Marton tho other day proved that for Marton, at any rate, the Wanganui harbour is the natural port. The Advocate saya that the buggy was sent via Foxton instead of via Wanganui, with the result that it coat £2 18s 3d railage ia placS of 17s Bd, On Monday evening the Upokongaro Dramatic Club will perform in the Princess Theatre, when the bill will contain "The Angel of the Attic," "A Pretty Piece of Business," and Buckstone's famous "Nan, the Good for Nothing." The Collegiate Chapel, in aid of the funds of which the entertainment is being given, should reap a .rich harvest, | On her last trip from Wellington to Greymouth, the steamer Ohau was struck by lightning. The lightning conductors were burnt off at the masthead,- while a piece of the steel mast was fused and presented the appearance of having been burned away in a furnace. The truck of the mast was split in two, one piece being picked up forward and the other piece going aft. The signal halyards disappeared altogether, not a trace being left. It is not surprising that the Government should have closed the Napier Lunatic Asylum, if Mr Callsghan was correct when he stated in the House that the patients there had cost £100 a year each, while the cost elsewhere ranged from £21 to £27. There has been an increase last year of no less than £58 a head. Napier seems a happy spot for those who have the management of Hospitals and Asylums, judging, by the figures published lately. From a conversation with the Harbourmaster yesterday we gather that the real cause of the trouble with the South Spit is caused not so much by the encroachment on the sea side, as from the fact that the protecting wall, placed there some years back, was too far in, allowing the river now to flow much closer to the Spit than it had previously done. It would, he says, have been much easier to have re-claimed the land on the river tide of the bank than on the beach, and had this been attended to in the first instance, there would have been no further trouble with it, The following will play in the Scotch and Irish v. English football match on Saturday next :— Scotch and Irish— Craig (2), Coakley (2), Strachan, Copeland, Thompson, Peat, Hogg, Murray, Fowler, R. Montgomerie, Troy, Jamieson, Austin, West, Adamaon, Mason, Carroll, and Keegan, English— Chabb, Gray, Powell, Rankin, D. Kitchen, Roddy, Walker (2), Broad, Bvockman, E, Smith, Wicksteed, Fookes, Walton, Greenwood, Oudaille, Bradley, Brown, Stone, and Thompson. Players are requested to be on the ground as near 3 o'clock as possible, in order to be able to play full time. The uaual monthly drill of the Navals took place last night when there was a fair attendance. At the after meeting the question of electing a second lieutenant was considered. C.P.O. Neill was proposed, but declined to accept the positions He preferred to see new blood introduced, and having gained the sanction of Mr T. J. Nicholls, he had much pleasure in proposing him for the vacancy. P.O. Stitt seconded the motion, which was agreed to unanimously, We understand that Lieutenant Nicholls has had Volunteer experience in other places, and believe he will make a useful officer to the Navala. A competition for a second-class petty officer took place during the evening, when Seaman Ansley was the successful candidate. The other three nominated went through their trials in a very satisfactory manner. After parade the white gaiters recently ordered were served out, tho effect of which tends greatly to add to the appearance of the me n, who are delighted with them, Natives who have lately come down the river have brought word that Messrs Butler and Stevens have been very successful in their negotiations with the natives for the purchase of shaves in the Waimarino Block. About a week ago it was rumoured in town, and we noticed that the Rangitikei Advocate published the rumour (showing that it had gone further than Wanganui), that trouble was expected at Monganui-o-te-ao, where anyone who went soliciting signatures was to be shot. At the time this story was about we made careful enquiries, and failing to trace it to a reliable source, wo refused to make it public. It was stated also that a chief's house had been burned down, his cattle shot, etc., but this was equally without foundation, and the fact that tho Laud Purchase Commissioners have gone on as far as Taumarunui, and are meeting with flue coss, proves there was nothing in the diequictiug rumour at one time ciiculated. How to Gt-T Sick.— Expose yourself day and night, sit too much without exercise, work too hard without rest, doctor all the time, take all the vile nostrums and imitations advertised, and then you will want to know. How to Get Well.— Which is answered in three words— Tako American Co.'s Hop Bitters ! Bead. KEATING'S COUGH LOZENGES cure Coughs, Asthma, Bronchitis. Medical testi» mony states that no other medicine is so effectual in tho enre of these dangerous maladies. One Lozenge alone gives ease, one or two at bedtime ensures rest, For relieving difficulty of breathing they are invaluable. They contain no opium nor any violent drug. Attention is drawn to a new advertisement from Messrs Nicholl3 and Co., which appears in anothor column. Colonel MoDonnoll, Justice of tho Peace, was reportod the other day for non-attend-ance at the Police Court. Why does not the Colonel have his name removed from the rota? In connection with tho accident to Mr Purchaa on Sunday last, Mr Fiejd, juur., wishes us to state that he did not jump into the river to rescue Mr Purchas, the latter's son being the only individual who did so. Two more connections with tho Telephone Exchange will bo completed in a few days ; viz., F. R, Jackson (private house) No 85, and W. G. Bassett (private house) No 86, The police intend to oppose the application, by W» H. Gibson, for a licensed house to be erected on the River Bank about a chain above the railway bridge, and about half way between the Aramoho and Masonic Hotels. Amongst other grounds of objection, Inspector James states that, in his opinion, the house would be in too close proximity to the railway crossing, and that a licensed house is not required in that locality, Looking over the police report on the applications to be heard by the Wanganui Licensing Bench on Mouday next, we find that Inspector James, with regard to tho Wanganni Hotel, says: — "Thia house having been closed during the last 12 months without inconvenience to the public I do not think it is necessary to re-open ib," No objections are made to the Railway Hotel, or other transfers, Mr G. 1 King, J.P., having failed to attend the Court yesterday, when his name was on the rota, was summoned for this morning. Mr King put in his appearance, but there being nothing to do his services were not required We understand that he will make application for leave of absence, as he is about to take a six months' holiday on a trip to the Old Country. ' The Chief Postmaster, Mr Mcßetb, has received from Wellington the medala and certificates in connection with the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition. The list of awards is as follows :— J, W. Baker (certificate), Edwin Barrett (2 certificates), T. Bush (silver medal and certificate), J. Caiman (certificate), J. Duigan (bronze medal), T. Ellis (certificate), J. W. McDuff (silver medal and certificate), D. Murray (silver n^&dal and certificate), Miss M, A» Smidt (certificate), J. Soler (silver medal and certificate), J. Whitlock (bronze medal and two certificates), and A, D. Willis (silver medal and certificate) < The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui CountyCounoilwasheldyesterday, when the same members were present as at the annual meeting. A circular from the Survey Department was read, asking for a report on the works undertaken by authority of the Minister of Lands, to open Crown Lands for sale, up to date 30th next. The secretary had replied that no such works had been undertaken, In reply to an application from the Mangawhero Road Board, applying for a refund of their share of the monies paid under "Tho Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, 1885," the clerk was instructed to state that when the accounts were adjusted any surplus out of subsidies would be spent amongst special rating districts in proportion to tho contributions of such districts. Mr Leydon wrote asking for an extension of" time on his Mangawhero Bridge contract, and it was decided that subject to his sureties' consent, the time would be extended till October Ist. The olerkread a statement of the receipts and expenditure under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, showing ,the following balances : — Wanganui-Murimotu cr balance, £109 8s 9d ; No 2 Line Extension, cr balance, £792 12s lid ; Wanganui-Hunterville, cr balance, £68 8j 2d j River Bank dr £43 15s Id. The Action of the chairman in paying £250 to the credit of the Wangaehu Road Board out of the ordinary county fund was endorsed- Accounts to the amount of £298 83 4d were passed for payment, and thej Board then adjourned. It was certainly high time some ohago was made iv the day of meeting of the Harbour Board, and Mr Poison's motion for doing so came none too soon. Ycptoriay, for instance, at the hour specified, there was not a single member in attendance. At about 20 minutes to 3 Mr Cornfoot appeared, and by the energetic use of the telephone, the secretary managed to secure the presence of three other members, Messrs Willis, Handley, and Borlase, but after waiting some time for a fifth to make a quorum, the four gradually melted away. At about 3.20 Messrs Poison and Blythe, who had to attend the Wanganui County Council meeting, adjourned that body for an hour, and went to the Harbour Board office. In the meantime Mr Spurdle had been hunted up, and by the use of the telephone, Messrs Cornfoot and Willis were again brought down, after which the business prooeeded. It is to be hoped now that a change has been made in the day of meeting, the Harbour Board will no longer deserve the reproach of being the most unpunctual body in Wanganui.
