The Wanganui Jookey Club has endomed the disqualification of the hones' May and Kangaroo. The owner was disqualified at the late Nelson Meeting, and h»a been nomi. nated for the Birthday Steeplechase Handicaps here, but will not be ellgable to start. Another display of fireworks, on a much larger aoale than the last one which proved suoh a suoceas, will be given by Mr Newman at the Heads on Friday next. Two trains will be run, and the display will commence at about B. o'clock, A new local industry in the way of churns ia advertised by Messrs Cummins, Sharpe, and Co. who are agents for it. This ia known as PeSer's Star Patent, and Is somewhat similiar in principle to the American churns. The maker claims for it that it is simpler in construction and more economical in working than any other oburn. It is made of kauri, and is to all appearances capable of doing what is claimed for it. , Those interested in the subject may examine the churn .at Messrs Cummins, Sharpe, and (Vs., who will be pleased to explain its working. Colonel Sargood has been inspecting the Dunedin Volunteers, and speaking plainly to them. Amongst other thing*, he impressed on them the absolute necessity, as good soldiers, of taking oare that there were no dirty belts and no dirty buttons among * them. He was quite aure of this ; that one and all of them would agree with him when he stated that a man who did not take a ' pride in himself was not much use as *t soldier. (Applause.) They might have thought him unduly particular in p&ning from man to man and notioing these little wants, and occasionally asking questions Bucb as, How long it was since that belt was cleaned ? He was sorry that in some oases he had reoeived doubtful answers to these queries* On some occasions the answer was that the man waa not quite sure when hia belt was last cleaned (laughter), and in other oases he was told that it was before the last gar* Me. Neither of theas answers were snohas he* should ha,ye reoejvedj They showed neither justice to the men themselves sor to ' the oompany they belonged to. It should be laid down aa an absolute rule that no man should come on parade unless his arms and accoutrements were perfectly clean. Unless these matters were attended to he should say that such men had better stay away. It was not fair to. themselves nqr to their commanding sffioer, and he did not think their commanding officer could be too strict in that respect. He thanked them for their steadiness and quietness while he was addressing them, but he must say he was not pleased with the talking and unsteadineM after inspecting the various companies; There should not have been the slightest whisper, but it must have been notioed that conversation was going on all through the room. He asked them not to let that be repeated when he had the pleasure of seeing them againi There ia a good deal in these remarks, which our Volunteers can take to • themselves, and we trust they will give them consideration;
