What good does this Lime do when spread on the surface of the soil ? It supplies the lime which all plants require as part of their food. It combines with acids in the soil so as to remove the sourness of the land. It gradually disposes the vegetable matter of the soil to change into soluble food for plants ; and lastly, it acts upon the mineral matter of the soil so as to fit it for entering in to the roots of growing plants.
