SECOND DAY.
The ' March meeting for 1884 has come, and gone, and taken altogether it may be said to have been the most successful that has been held here. The fields have all bden large, and the close finishes have shown that a good handicapper has been secured in Mr Evitt. The attendance on the second daywas very good, though the ladies were not so numerous as on the day previous. Therehas'been fortunately only one accident, and that' is nothing more serious than a few ribs broken. In the Maiden Plate, public opinion, as judged by the totalisators, was (jut, jfclie winner turning up in Martha, though Wattie used all his knowledge,' Parere could not get anything better than second place, and McCormick was loudly cheered on weighing in. The Handicap Hurdles proved a grand race, ' Chevalier making jthe running all the way, with Orient close iup. Loch Lomond's jock kept back till fully two miles of the race had been run, and' then he let out, and passing one after the other of his horses till coming alongside of Orient, when a good tussle took place, and entering the straight Orient was shaken :off, and Loch Lomond won as he liked. In the Stakes the pot boiled over properly, the public laying their money on The Poet. It was stated the dividends on Maori were scooped up almost entirely by the bookmakers and jocks. One well-known racing man made an attempt to get his money on the inside totalisator after horses had started, by saying the start was a false one ; 'the ruse, however, did not succeed there, though it was rumoured that on the outside machine he was successful. If this is correct, it shows something unsatisfactory in the mode of stopping the issue of tickets, and the matter should receive attention, The Poet made the running, and looked very like a winner, the race being to all appearances his, till on entering the straight Maori showed up, and leaving the ruck pressed Mr Bate's horse; winning eventually by lialf-a-length, .the third horse being also separated by half-a-length. For the Nursery Handicap ithe Sapling's winner started first favourite, 'and Tommy Scott had little trouble in pulling off the race, though Wattie, on Miss Puritan, rode hard. The winner of the first d^y's Hack Race repeated his victory, and after the race Mr Herbert Jackson sold him to a gentleman from Masterton for the sum of £45. For the District Handicap the public seemed to fancy the three placed horses, about equally, and the result justified their conclusions. The race was one of the prettiest during the meeting; at one time the whole of the horses were so close together that frqtn^ the steward's stand it was almost" "impossible to place them. Buzzard and Ahua made the running, Blue Gown also showing up well, McCormick displayed excellent judgment in his jockeying of Minemoa, and it was only when within half a mile from home )hat he | let the mare out, and, passing the others, j tried conclusions with Buzzard, who was then leading. - Ahua came in a good second, being only half a length behind the winner. The last event on the cards brought out some of the best horses, which have run during the two days' meeting. Administrator, from his cup performance, was .first, favorite, and Derritt showed his* judgment by holding back till entering the straight. A good race resulted between the roan, and vVitiora, but the grey had to be content with second place. Hack Race. H. H. Jackson's Makoia .1 , Bremer's Southern Chief 2 Five others started. Makoia got the best of the start, Southern Chief being second horse. The grey was never caught, and won by a length, Harrison's Apology being a length behind the second horse. A good start was effected, Leonessa being airongst the foremo^u, and at the top of the course Blue Gown took third place. At the quarter, mile Leonessa was leading, all the rest being close up, Dusk last. A pretty race ensued until the three-quarter mile post was reached all the horses running together, Ringleader being last. Passing the post the horses were still in the same positions, Blue Gowa being third, and Ringleader ,lasb. When the one and quarter-mile had been run, Buzzard took the lead, with Ahua close up. Hinemoa here commenced to forge ahead, and soon took second place, with Blue Gown third. At the mile and threequarters, Buzzard and JBinemoa got together, and some good running was made. Entering the straight Ahua came up, and was soon possessor of second place, Buzzard taking third. This order was maintained till the post was reached, Hinemoa winning by half a length, Buzzard being about one length behind Ahua. Blue Gown was a good fourth. The start was in favor of Okato, Administrator being second, Dusk and Libeller next. At the 4-mile Okato still lead, with Dusk close up, and Administrator third. Dusk took the lead at the mile post, the others occupying the same positions as before. Witiora here forced the running, and before the three-quarters had been done she occupied ' first place. In the straight Derritt let his horse out, and a good race ensued, Witiora and Administrator racing neck and neck for some distance. The grey was, however, too late, and Administrator won by half a length, Libeller a good third, Okato aad Dusk finishing in the order named. Inside totalisator 337, dividend £1 19s.
