UPOKONGARO ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I would feel obliged if you would insert the following few remarks. At the last meeting of the Wangaehu Road Board the chairman took upon himself the power of dictating to the members and settlers where their rates are to be spent. By what authority can he do so ? The road is scheduled a main road, and so is the No. 3 Line. lam told there has been a good deal spent there f.n what is called repairs. The Upokongaro road is left with broken culverts, the road beiug carried away in some phces. There has been scarcely any money spent on it for the last two or three years. The County Council has applied for a sum ( f money under the Roads and Bridee3 Construction Act, the work to commence above Mr Gower's boundary. But that is not granted yet, and, if granted, the settlers have to specially tax themselves for ten years to pay the required portion off. And by doing so, according to Mr Sonamerville's ruling, they deprive themselves of the benefit of all rates collected in ihe district. If that is the Chairman's or Board's justice to a district, the sooner each locality can get a division the better. Mr Sommerville says at last meeting of the fioad Board that I am the cause and stumbling block in the way of the district getting money. If he will explain in what way I have done so to the satisfaction of my constituents, I will be most happy to resign 'my public position for their benefit. — 1 am, &c, John Kennedy.
