In reply to questions, Ministers said Government was doing its best to prevent the destruction of kauri timber by bush fires. — A Bill to provide for certain land grants to Waimate half-castes wou'd be introduced. — The railway from Wanganui to New Plymouth would be completed in about eighteen months after the money for the purpose was voted. — Owing to want of funds it was not proposed to vote' any sum by way of subsidy to public libraries. — It would not be convenient to have a local rsgestration of trade marks. — Government did not intend to amend the Jury Act this session. — Government would amend the Rating Act so as to empower town districts to levy rates the same as Municipal Corporations. — Government would bring in an Amending Act in regard to the lawyers practising in Native Land Courts. — Government had taken steps to establish a sanitorium at the Hanmer Plains Hot Springs.— Government intended to introduce a bill to increase the salaries of Judge*.. < . The Gisborne Coasts Proceedings Valuation Bill was read a first time ; after some discussion, read a second time ; passed through Committee, and finally read » third time. A motion was agreed to, to the effect that Government business take precedence on Thursdays. — The motion was opposed by Sir George Grey, and Messrs J. W. Thompson, Joyce, lvess, Macandrew, Fish, and Montgomery, but was earned on a division by 40 to 24. Major Atkinson announced that instead of moving a resolution re the Pacific annexation he intended to ask for a Select Committee to consider the whole subjret. < Mr Steward, at considerable length, moV*f the second reading of the Election of School Committees Bill Mr Dick was prepared to vote for the Bill. — Mr Montgomery thong bt a better definition of householder necessary. —Mr Watt supported the Bill, but was not opposed to the cumulative vote. — Major Atkinson intimated that the Government proposed to extend the time allowed to local - bodies to send in applications to have main roads declared to 30th June, instead of 31at March.
