CATAPULTS AND SHANGHAIS.
TO THE EDITOE.
Sib, — The small bird nuisance is no' doubt a great one; at the same time I am of opinion that one of the remedies is worse than the disease. The plan adopted hy sdme parents in this town of payingjtheir boys so much a dozen for small birds dead* or auve,is reviving that ancient implement of warfare the sling, encouraging stone throwing, and resuscitating the larrikin catapult — the shanghai. For my part I would rather that every sparrow in the town should die of old age, than that my child should lose an eye by a stray shot from one of these juvenile bird killers, and suoh a 1 mishap is by no means improbable during the sparrow raid. For when a boy starts out with the intention of knocking over birds, failing to find any, he is almost certain to have a shot at something else, as many a broken window will testify. It is high time the shanghai nuisance should be suppressed and the most effectual way to accomplish this is to prohibit shopkeers from selling catapults or the strong elastic bands with which they are made, to boys. — I am, &c, ANTIOATAPDI/ra.
