July 6.

Sergeant McGoveru has Becured an important witness in tho Winiata case, a halfcaste, named Clemenl;s to Newton, to whom Winiata confessed .tbe circumstance of the murder at Kuiti in 1880. Mr Gilmour, postmaster at Raglan, took down the half-caste's statement at the time, he having told that gentleman of Winiata's conversation. The written statement is forthcoming. Newton arrived to-night with Constable Gillies. The Maori, Kata I'uke, believed to have committed suicide by jumping overboard from the Mahirangi at Mongonui, was in low spirits, through alleged irregularities on the part of his wife. A boatman named Gordon was found dead in a boat floating on the Wairoa River, near Dargaville to-day. The cause of death is supposed to be heart disease. About forty men were discharged or have resigned from the Constabulary in the Waikato, and are coming in from the road.
