LAUNCH OF THE RAUMAI.
The launch of the Naval Brigade's pinnace on Wednesday afternoon attracted a large gathering. The craft was taken from Mr R. Law's shed along the Quay to the water's edge, near the end of the breastwork. This was done by the aid of a trolly and rollers, the motive power being supplied by the members of the Brigade, assisted by willing volunteers. The ceremony of christening the boat was Serformed by a little girl, daughter of aptain Abbott, who, as the pinnace glided down the ways prepared, declared the name to be the " Raumai." This is the Native name for the leaves of the matai, and is moreover the name of Captain Abbot's Rangitikei property. The pinnace fairly afloat in its natural element was quickly manned by the Brigade, the members tumbling aboard in nautical style. A large company also embarked, consisting of the Drum and Fife Band belonging to the Brigade, and several officers of the other local Companies. Even with a load of 60 or more the boat was hardly low enough in the water. The oars were manned, and with the Band playing some spirited music, the pinnace proceeded up the river. The rowing of the scratch crew appeared to afford amusement to the assembled crowd, but considering the height the men were out of the water very creditable work was put on. After a short trip up the river the pinnace returned to the boat sheds. The appearance of the Raumai was greatly admired, and the Naval Brigade are delighted with their handsome and commodious ship.
