At the inquest on the body of Win. Smith, the jury returned a verdict of found drowned with marks of violence, namely, a pistol bullet in the head. It is said that O'Connor goes to Dunedin to run Burke, the Dunedin champion runner.

The Volunteer review passed off suefully. Sergt Taylor was presented with Captain Clarke's Cup, and Volunteer Cooper with Mrs McOosh Clarke's Belt, and Petty Officer Moore received the Naval Brigade Champion Belt. The Thames goldfields sends a handsome collection of specimens and mineral exhibits to the Sydney Exhibition. After Sergt-Major Talty's death, some persons got hold of his bank book, which showed £33 to hia credit. Two men named Thomas Ingain and Thomas Mulvany presented themselves at the Bank at which the money was lodged, and after certain preliminaries one of them presented a cheque for £18. He hai no wish, he said to draw the whole of his money. The Bank clerk, however, waß wide awake. He knew of the death of Talty, and sent information to the police. Before they were aware of the cause of delay, both men were in custody on a charge of stealing securities to the value of £33:

Inghain and Mulvany were charged with stealing securities of the value of £33 belonging to the late Sergt.-Major Talty, and were remanded till Saturday. The Hon. Mr Patterson, M.L-.C, received a nasty scalp wound on board the Rotorua through, a sudden lurch of the steamer off Gisborne, causing him to fall off his seat on his head.

The Auckland Stud Co. have purchased Maclean and Go's and Major Walmsley's thoroughbred stock, including Musket ; also Morrin and Co's draught stock, including the Clydesdale horse Elgin ; also the Morris's Glen.Orchard Estate. Major Walmsley has been appointed manager. Rewi, it is said, will come to Auckland to see the Governor on his arrival.

The Hon. Mr Sheehan has returned to Auckland. •He still suffers from quinsey.
