WAVERLEY .

(from our own correspondent.)

Nov 28th, 1878.

A public meeting was held in the Town Hall, Waverley, on the 26th inst., $o take into consideration the »dvisablefiess of establishing a 1 library under the "Tublic Libraries' Act. 1875." Mr Swinburne in the Chair. It was proposed by the Rev. It. J. Allawortty -and seconded by Mr Bridge — That immediate steps be taken by this meeting toestablish[a Public Library , for the town and district of Waverley in accordance wftb; clause 2, of the "Public Libraries' Act, 1875 ;" and those present form themselves into an adinteriui committee, with power to add to their number. Carried unanimously. Mr W. A. G. Winchcombe was unanimously elected Secretary, pro tern. Proposed by iS.v Bridge,' laaq seconded by Rev W. J. Alls worth— That a list of donations and subscribra be opened, and copies placed in, tho.Banks of New Zealand and Australasia, aud at the office of Mr Winchcombe. This was also carried, and the meeting adjourned for a fortnight. The attendance' was no/t ss|arg| as^night have been expected, but this iia common complaint here. Except in extreme cases settlers will not turn out, thus throwing the trouble and responsibility of inaugurating anything ;for- the, r ' gc«>d of the district on a few willing ■w^kera.J , A committee, consisting of Messrs AUsworth, Bridge, Haweß,Mas'qn,'.ilume, McFarlane, and Wihchcomb, 1 was formed, and donations and subscriptions promised. A meeting of the School Committee wai held on Wednesday evening. Present — Messrs Mason, (Chairman") McDonald, and Thurston. After confirming tho minutes of the previous meeting, tenders were opened for the works appertaining to the school. The tenders' for ' No 1 contract which included porch to master's residence; removal and enlargement of closets, &c, were considered, too high and outside of the means of . the Committee. It was resolved to issue frejsh tenders for these works. For, No 2 , s contract lUrJ. Hume's tender was .accepted. This contract provides for enclosing, the 'school grounds and repairing , existing' 'fences, matters which appear to have escaped the attention of the previous,' Committee: For No 3 contract Messrs Stuart and Jones' tender was accepted. This provides for grubbing aud trimming furze, which has previously been r allowed tto spread without let or hindrance. • Hit - wate also resolved to issue tenders/ for a dividing fence. When these works are completed and the addition, to the school now in coarse of erection, the grounds should present, a yerv- different, appearance. I have just been interrupted by a report that a horse had fallen on its rider on the maih'roa'd. :Oa ha&tening^to the scene of the occurrence,- iCihidrjhat the report is correct. Willing hands have extricated the rider from under the quadruped, minus a boot, but otherwise no worse for the fall. It appears that the, horse, which, by the bye, 1 is Wmare, and the property of Mr David Hunter, was being ridden slowly along the road when she fell, just in front of Mr T., Bead's, saddler. The rider was, as I before stated, unhurt, but, strange to say, the mare did not g£t up, bijt died ih Jaff ew ftiinutes. A crowd soon collected, and I heard a bet of a note offered as to the; cause of death. Our local Vet., who was on the spot, did not favour us with his opinion, and when i a post mortem was suggested by a byestander, did not appear anxious. 'My own opinion is that the cause was heart' 1 disease, so sudden a colla£se ! can scarcely otherwise be accounted for. Mr Hunter h|ae not been fortunate since he settled among us, having lost many cattle and sheep lduring the winter. f , ; /
