HALCOMBE.

(from ouk own correspondent.) October -2nd; 1878. \ Yesterday the members of the Halcombei Cricket Club played their opening match on the ground known as the Railway Reserve. The stores were closed on consideration of it being the first match that had been played in the township. The weather being all that could be desired, the inhabitants' turned out en masse, only too glad to witness any* thing tending to give life to this now fast rising town. The ground, which is not of therery best, may during the season, with proper attention, be got into a very good condition. The Club at present consists of about 55 members; this we think is very good for a start, and judging from the way the willows were handled yesterday, there is every reason to believe that Halcombe will soon be able to send out some good players. The contest yesterday* was between Married and Single, resulting in the latter being defeated. On this occasion as ib was remarked,. Halcombe turned out in her very' best clothes, and the scene in the neighbourhood of France's Hotel and Railway Station presented a very lively appearance, the dis- - play of bunting; and the presence of the fairer sex adding to the gaiety of the scene. There was also a goodly display of the' native element, who seemed to enter into the game by cheering vociferously when ever a good hit was made. This of course is only a beginning in the right direction, and we may expect that this manly game will be engaged in with no small amount of zeal in future.
