PALMERSTON NORTH.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Aug. 'It. ■ The meeting in Jackeytown to consider meanß to obtain greater facilities for disposing of their produce by railway, was held at Mr Rowland's, most of the settlors round about attending, although some were unavoidably absent. Mr Akers was voted into the chair. Mr Rowlands stated, as his experience, tho railway instead of improving .the prospects of the farmer in this district, it had been a cause of loss, and unless greater facilities were given, he should devote his land to sheep instead of crops. Mr Hamilton called attention to the fact that they had unfairly to pay freight and fare from Oroua Bridge or Karere. Hitherto he Jhad supported the railway as much as possible, but in future he should not trouble them, as he had already bought sheep. Several other speakers complained of the loss they were put to by not having a shunt at Jackeytown. The Chairman said he believed they would have a shunt, and that it was a pity to see good farmers obliged to turn their attention to sheep-farming because they could not get their produce away. It was eventually resolved to adjourn for a fortnight, to await an answer from the Minister of Public Works to a letter sent him by Mr McEwan. To-day I heard that the answer had arrived, but could not ascertain its nature. Considerable amount of building and alterations are going on, in Palmerston, but the terrible weather We have .been, having has hindered "many, contracts, notably the Bank of New Zealand. I .have had the; pleasure of looking over the place in its ''unfinished state,-- and. shalF give a description when more" advanced^ Mr Fergurson has also made extensive alterations in big premises. j Several new "houses 'arerbeing> erected < on the fiat. Some days Ago I mentioned that a post office box might be attached to the guards van, and I am now informed thai this plan is actually adopted on the Southern railways. . , Mr McAlister, Government' Auditor, has being paying us an official visit: * A meeting of the shareholders of the Public Hall Company was held last night,- to consider (Ist) the advisability of winding up the Company ; and (2nd) the proposal of the Borough Council to buy it. Mr Leary took the chair. Mr (Keeling the Secretary read a balance sheet showing that upwards of £1,200 had been received and* expended, and that the liabilities were over £1,100. He also read the offer of the Borough Council as follows ; — "The whole sum to be £1,500, to be paid — first two years, £100 ; the second, two years, £200 ; next three years,. £300; each of the foregoing sums to be part of the purchase money. Further, that if the whole sum were paid within the first four years, a rebate of £200 should be made upon the purchase money." , This brought forth some discussion, but it was resolved — That the Palmerston North Public Hall Company, Limited, be voluntarily wound up. The following gentlemen were elected a committee of liquidators : — Messrs Jenssen, J.P. Leary, Mackie, Knight, Walton, G-. Roe, Grammar, and Abrahams, together with the old directors, Messrs Waldegrave, Linton, Palmerston, and Nannested. The meeting then separated.
