Dunedin, April 28. An application has been lodged by one person to lease,for pastoral purposes, the whole 64 ; 000 acres, and which the applications to buy were refused by the Waste Lands Board on Wednesday.

Undoubted case of Typhoid fever here. Maunsell says it displays all the characteristic symptoms. It was introduced by a passenger per Otago. Professor Bickerton, of Christchurch, at the request of the Superintendent has analysed sample of Mount Rangitoto silver ore, and gives the followingresult .—Lead, 51 per cent.; silver, 70 to 80 ezs. per ton, with appreciable amount of gold.
New Plymouth, April 28.
Hon. Mr Bowen had a conference with the Harbour Board yesterday relative to the construction of Harbor works, establishing- central prison, and employment of convict labour. Tho Board*, with slight modifications, agreed to the following proposals made by Government :—: — Central penal establishment to be erected near Harbor works ; actual value of convict labor to be charged on Harbor Endowment Fund ; balance of fund to be expended on works as money is available ; whenever a sufficient amount is accumulated contracts to be let for accelerating progress of work ; no charge incidental to construction and maintenance or discipline of convict establishment to be charged upon Harbor Endowment Act, to be introduced next session to carry out above.

It is understood that the provincial loans mentioned in to-Jay's Sydney cablegrams refer to loans for special objects (not given) such as harbonrs. &c, on special securities, and which therefore, will not be taken over by the Colonial Government on the abolition of the provinces.

Cify Council increased salaries of all the officers proportionately according to salary, the Town Clerk's being increased from £300 to £400.
The Agents of the Pai'ific Mail Company have arranged that the steamer Taranaki pioceeds South with mails immediately on arrival of the City of San Francisco, and if nooessary wait for her till Monday.
Lyttelton, April 27.
During the gale last night the s s Beautiful Star drove on to one of the wlvirves where a bolt head or pile cut one ofher plates below the water line Tho accident was not discovered until 4.30 this morning-, when both the fore and main holds were full of water. Steam was got up and the vessel beached in Dampjcp's Bay. Bho had about IQO tons oi cargo on board at the time. The damage will be repaired on Saturday.
CmtiSTCHuitCH, April 27. The provincial statement of receipts
and expenditure- for the past quarter shows a very satisfactory state of affairs. The receipts from railways during the quarter amounted to £56,952. Expenditure for ordinary expenses and renewal fund —±23,484. Keceipts from waste lands for the same period wero-— £85,724.
