TURAKINA.

(From our own correspondent. ) Feb. 11. On Monday evening last a public meeting was held in the Sclio.-l-houso hero m connection with the Rangilikei Educational Assooiai ion, but in consequence of little or no notice having boon given, it was not so well attended sis might have boon expected. The Secretary react a financial statement, and various suggesj tions were made relative to the next petition. Messrs J. Bruce, R. lvnox, and R. McAlloy wcro appointed to canvass the district for subscriptions. No doubt many will bo found willing to support an Association which has already done very much in promoting an interest in education among the public, and has applied a stimulus both to the teachers and taught throughout the district. Gravel is already being put upon our roads near the village, a fact which shows an amount of providence seldom shown by those in charge of roads. The work as a rule in other places at least is left till winter sot*, in. It is pleasant to have to record the fact that a number of the parents having children attending the public school here have presented the boys with a set of cricket materials. They will be valued by the recipients who will not be slow to appreciate any interest taken in their sports. Very considerable inconvenience is felt by those making use of the telegraph, owing to the distance which they are compelled to go to the office. The settlers now are quite convinced of their own supineness in allowing themselves to be deprived of the post and telegraph offices. Were the office in the village there can be no doubt that it would be very much more used than at present. The receiving box and delivery of letters in the village is at best but an apology for something better. Some are anxious even yet to try what can be done to get the offices in the village, maintaining that they are nob in the least wanted where they are at present until at least the railway is opened.
