After the first quarter of a mile; Voltaire threw his rider, who seemed to be about to rise off the ground, when to- all appearance one of other horses trod upon him, and he was carried oft" the'course. Princess Mary cut out the running-, leadingPhoenix and Cocksure by six or seven lengths ; Hap Hazard was behind from the first, and had no show. Upon nearing the straight Cocksure overhauled Princess Maryoasily, followed by Phcenix, and then led both at the straight by several lengths. Won by eight" lengths, Phoenix 2nd, Princess Mary 3rd. Dr Diver attended to the boy, aylio it turned out had life'thigh broken. The Liuna lias just returned from White's Bay. The test indicates a clean break of the cable .about.fourteen miles from here. . : Major Atkinson leaves for Taranaki per Luna to-night. The schooner,: Young Dick was sold to-day at Auction by order of the Vice Admiralty Court, and bought in for the ; Captain by Turnbull and Co., for £2075 ; the Aipset price fixed by the Court was £1,500. The expenses of the casein Court amounted to £1100. Wellington, Dec. 15. l3rogden's schooner Julius Yog'el was offered at auction to-day,but bought in at £800. AH Brogden's railway stores were sold. Gisborne has abandoned his intention of standing- for Wellington, in consequence, it is supposed, of his defeat for the mayoralty. A^ From tests applied here, tht in the cable appears to be midway across the Straits. The Luna left this after-
noon with Lemon to ascertain what the tests from Wliitc's Bay indicate.. All the gear necessary for lifting tlic cable is here, but it will take nearly a week to fix on board the Luna. The Government have chartered the steamer Tui to run across twice each wav'every 24- hours until the cable is repaired.
