He was selected and purchased by Thomas Crispe, Esq., of Batley Abby, Suffolk," for R. Q.Kerinode, Esq., of Mona Vale, near Hobart Town, Tasmania. He won the First Prize at the Society's Show, at Campbelltown, 1861, for the best imported draught stallion in the Colony ; and he won the same Prize in the Society's Show, held at Longford, in 1852. Major's stock are distributed throughout the District, and ar 6 sufficient recommendation of their Sire. Major will travel up the No. 2 Line on Mondays, arriving at Turakina at night ; Marton, on Tuesdays; at Hammond's, on Tuesday night ; at Bulls, on Wednesday; returning to Turakina on Thursday, and home on Fridays ; Wanganui, on Saturday. Duchess was bred in Tasmania iy Dr Williams, near Longford, out oi an imported dam, by an imported sire. ; She gained Ist prize at Longford when five years old ; was afterwards sold to Mr Rae, buyer of the celebrated Scotch Jock, and.sold to.Mr Stevenson for £150. She gained 2nd prize at h_st Taieri in 1869, against allcomers, her daughter Belle taking the lsl prize. After taking twenty prizes in Otago, Bdle was.sold to Mr Holly, of Ohristchurch, where she continues to take first prizes year after year against imported stock. ; , ; His sire was the celebrated horse Marquis. Marquis was bred by John Brown, Esq., of Preston Hall, Heidelberg, and is allowed by competent judges to be the best horse ever bred in Victoria. Marquis gained the following prizes : When 1 year old, 2 first prizes ; at 2 year old, 3 first • when 3 years old, 6 first and 2 second, showing against imported horses ; when 4 years old, showing againt all comers, 4 first and 1 second,, and three days before being shipped he carried off the first prize at. the Grand National Show at Geelong over 12 competitors. In Otago he gained 5 first prizes and 6 second Ma.rquis is by Prince Charlie, out of Brown's celebrated mare Old Jane Old Jane gained 13 first prizes, and never was beaten in her day. ' Surprise carried off the first prize for horses bred in the Colony, at the last show of the Wanganui Agricultural Assooiation.
