May Ist. . Messrs, H. Matson ana Co.; report on the live stocks market as follows : —At the Canterbury sale-yards on Wednesday last, 224 head of cattle and 5194 sheep came to hand ; there was a large attendance of purchasers, and 'sales,were satisfactory. In cattle we sold 78 head for various owners at full prices, and quote prime beef at 35s per lOOlbs, with good demand. In sheep we yarded and sold 3664 of all descriptions for Messrs G. P Nixon, G-. Holmes, H. Maddison and others,at for fat cross-bred down wethers, 13s to 13s 6d, cross-bred ewes, fat, at 12, 12s 3d to 12s and 6d per head; station ewes, culls, at 2s sd, 2s 7d, 2s 9d to 3s per head, do. wethers, very inferior,,at 2s. 6d to 3s per head ; do. cross- bred ewes, at 3s per head, these were very inferior. The demand still continues fpr cross-bred wethers and sound healthy lambsj.biit very few are coming to hand ; tne great scarcity of this class of stock is much felt by buyers, who are unwilling to purchase other descriptions. In long wbolled rams, we have sold the Batterill Leicesters to Mr »• Grigg.of Longbeach.at satisfactory figures; also, M'Lean's Leicesters and other descriptions at fair rates. •
