MR ALLEN'S SOLECISMS.

TO THE EDITOR,

»Sni, —Mr Allen's last demands but little in the way of reply. I deny having abused him ; his utter insignificance secures him against that course, even were I so inclined. When Mr Allen was assured that his presumption concerning the identity of ' Consistency ' was incorrect, he ought to have accepted the affirmation unreservedly, and not continued to express his suspicions. To Mr Allen's hobby, I reply, for the last time, that if he or his chief have discovered this weak point in their natures, by which; they are prohibited from rationally enjoying nature's gifts, why, I admire the wisdom displayed in surrounding themselves with restrictions^ To men with similarly constituted organizations such is the only safeguard. I, with many others, can feel the benefit of moderate indulgence, and we are not afraid to venture lest we fall. Mr Allen is cautious—"generally speaking," " where it fails," and " almost invariably " being his modes of expression. There is a certain amount of latent weakness displayed here. But I will not triumph. Let those avlio are afraid of themselves flock to Mr Allen's standard, and there find safety. Was it in Ballarat where the Inebriate Asylum was inaugurated, and compulsorily closed because none would apply for admittance '? There are few to be found possessed of sufficient courage to admit their peculiar weakness. Thus, providing for nature's insufficiencies by adequate safeguards denotes a return to Consistency. Feb. 3.
