AN EX-PREMIER'S VOCABULARY.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sir, —It was very unkind of the N. Z. Times to refuse to publish Mr Fox's article which appeared in the Timaru Herald, and displayed bad taste and considerable weakness to urge as an excuse therefore, that its space was limited, and its tastes rather eclectic. But Mr Fox is not the virulent writer or speaker that he was in days gone by, when '< doubledyed scoundrel" was a choice appellation reserved for extreme cases. Now it seems that " deliberate and wilful falsehood " is the limit. Old age, ingratitude, and infirmity are toning down the old Avarrior, and his expressions exhibit a pleasing and pathetic mildness compared to former denunciations, which claims our sympathy and demands our attention. But how the old man's ruling passion governs him to the last. His irrepressible vanity could not brook the thought of the matter not being ventilated in his own district, but he chose rather a round-about method .to attain this consummation, in which too he was only partially successful. I presume it was only a coincidence Mr Fox's being in Timaru when the article appeared* But I can shew Mr Fox a way out of his difficulty. Does he not yet claim a column or so per week in the N". Z. Times which is conducted under his special editorial supervision, and in which he disseminates his temperance doctrines ? Now, might I suggest that he dishes up this immortal article for the special delectation of his friends, who will devour with avidity anything which savours of his sentiments. The reading public could then judge for themselves, and would doubtless form a substantially correct opinionfas to the true authorship thereof. If there are any characteristic features in the said article, they will soon be recognised. . . °
Yours, tfce., "Eclectic."
