MARTON,
(From our own Correspondent.) January 18,1875. Tlie return match between Marton and Feilding was played at Bulls on Saturday, and resulted as the last one in a victory for the Martonians. It will be noticed by the scores given below that there was a large per centage of byes which is to be attributed to the very uneven state of the ground. On the Marton side Jacob again distinguished himself by running up a score of 24 made up by some hard hitting. Bctenieyer, Jackson, and Beckett also stuck at the wickets well, scoring respectively 11, 11, 27. Several of the best players on the same side were very unlucky. A like remark may be made about the Feilding players, two or three of ■ their oft proved good bats doing nothing, Dernier and Eustace being the only ones that made any show. Dormer's bowling was remarkably good on the. Feilding side, and Chaldicott's on the Marton. Mr J. Stevens acted as umpire to the Feilding team, and Mr Deigliton to the: Marton. Mr John Howe of the Coach and ■Horses Hotel-.provided^a good lunch, to which both teams did justice.
The entertainment that was given in the evening was well patronised, and proved a great success. The glees sung by three' gentlemen were particularly noticeable for their excellence. To several of the solos a repetition was requested. ..The Sword Dance by a Maori girl, and Highland Fling by a cricketer met with a rapturous applause Mi- Francis of Wanganui very kindly came to take the Piano on the occasion, and of course very much of the success was owing to his able assistance. The Marton team proceeds to Wellington, by Prosser's Coach, on Monday, to play the, Wellingtonians on Wednesday, the 27tli. May they add to their laurels by returning as » corinuerinoheroes. . °
