EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board of Education met last Monday, and again yesterday : MiBrandon in the chair.

It was resolved that immediate steps be taken for the recovery of arrears of rates from defaulters.

A tetter having been received from the Eev Father Cummins, claiming .£3O compensation, on account 'of his having refused to take fees from the ,/iipils at St Philomeua's School, under the belief that it was to be taken over by the Board ; it was resolved that the sum should be paid. The Secretary was instructed to see the Provincial Secretary and ask that a temporary advance of £600 be made to meet present liabilities to be recouped out of arrears of rates and capitation fees still uncollected.

The nominations of the local committee were confirmed as follows : Upper Hutt—Messrs Morgan, Baylis, and Cudby ; Wairoa—Messrs BriW Wilson, and Fookes; Parewanui— Messrs _ 'Watkins and Paulin; Lower Rangitikei—Messrs Biirne, Ainon, and M'Kenzie ; .Kaitoke— Messrs Morgan and Jepson; Mars Hill and Matarawa — Messrs M'William and Higgic ; Dunlain and. Omoko— Messrs Old and Sergeant; River Bank Messrs Kennedy and Henson ; Mataongaonga — Messrs Slrachan and Sweeney.

The Chairman was authorized to take immediate steps to have the school property at G-reytown conveyed to the Board.

It was resolved that the salary to be paid to the Roman Catholic school at Wanganui should not exceed .£l5O. A letter was read from Messrs Hart and. Buckley, stating that Mr John Martin revoked his promise to conveyto the Board the land at Lower Hutfc On which the school-room was built.

The Secretary was instructed to write that the Board declined paying for the land, but. that on Mr Martin refunding such sums as had been expended on the building, the Board would throw no opposition, in Ms way. The Board then adjourned mi til yesterday.

Some matters of detail were then attended to.

Letters having been received from, the R,ev Fathers Petit, Jean, O'Reilly, and Cummins, and the Superior of the' Convent, relative to the Roman Catholic schools; it was decided to take no further steps in the matter, as there are now seven schools established by the Board in the City of Wellington, of which five are open to female scholars.

The Secretary produced plans and specifisations of a proposed model school-house for the country districts, whii-h, after sundry suggestions, were adopted, and the Secretary instructed to have lithographic copies drawn with the suggestions.—Post.
