AUCKLAND NEWS.

By the arrival of the s.s. St. Kilda we have received Auckland files to the 22nd. Wo take the following items from the N.Z. Herald :—

The notorious criminal, Isaac Kobinson, again managed to effect his escape from Mount Eden Gaol on Wednesday last. It will be remembered that on" a previous occasion he also managed to get clear, and that after his escape he went to a settler's house, and brutally assaulted, and then robbed him. After being at large a short time, however, he was recaptured and sent back to prison, after standing his trial for the escape, and getting an extra term of penal servitude. He was originally convicted of a highway robbery with violence, and is, or rather was, yesterday, undergoing a term of sixteen years' penal servitude. His last escape was effected in a very ingenious manner. By some means or other not very clearly explained, he managed to get possession of a warder's suit of clothes ; and, dressed in these, he seems to have passed scot-free beyond the precincts of the gaol. But it was not long before he was missed ; the police authorities were communicated with, and meu sent in pursuit in all directions. Up to a late hour, however, he had not been re-captured. There will, no doubt, be a strict enquiry into the manner of his escape. A banquet was given on Wednesday last to George McLeod, Esq., the prospector of Kennedy's Bay district, and discoverer of the celebrated Tokatea Claim, Coromandel, previous to his departure by the Nebraska for America. Mr James Mackay, Junr., presided with Mr Creighton, M. H. R., in the Vice "Chair. Mr McLeod stated that his absence would be but temporary, as he intended to return to the Colony,, and spend the remainder of his days assisting his friends to develop the mineral resources of the province of Auckland. j

An International Rifle Match was fired in Auckland on Saturday Fob 23. The competitors numbered 25,' England, Ireland, and Scotland, being each represented by eight volunteers of the Auckland district, natives of their respective countries. The ranges and conditions were 200, 500, and 600 yards ; Wimbledon targets and scoring ; seven shots at each distance. The English team socred 335, Irish 311, and Scotch, 282.

The total yield of the Thames Gold Fields for the month of Febrnary, was 12,444 ozs 7 dwt 12 grs. The resolution to wind up the Auckland and Fijian Cotton Company [Limited) has been gazetted.
