THE WILD MEN OF CALIFORNIA.
An old 1 v dor, Avriting from Grayson, California, to tho " Antioch Ledger" iii reference to a paragraph in that journal on the subject of a report that a gorilla had recently been seen in tho State, says that lie caught sight of ono of tho wild men of California last year while hunting in the mountains about- twenty miles south of Orfiysou. Finding on returning to his camp one evening that the charred sticks from his fireplace had been scattered about, ho kept watch next day in the bush, and, after Availing two hours, saAV standing hy the fire a creature in. the image of a man full five foot highy ' ate 7 disproportionately broad at the shoulders, with arms of great length: the legs Avero very short, and the body long ; the head was small compared Avith the rest of tlie creature, and appeared to be set upon his shoulders without a neck. The whole was covered with dark brown and cinnamon coloured hair, quite long ou some parts, that on the head standing in a shock, and growing down close to tlio eyes like a Digger Indian's. The creature . stooped and grasped a stick from the fire. This he' swung round and round until the fire on the end had gone out, when he repeated tho manoeuvre. Tho hunter sat and watched him as ho whistled and scattered fire about. Having amused himsdf apparently as long as he desired he started to go, and having gone a short distance returned and Avas joined by another—a female unmistakably— when they both turned, passed within twenty yards of the hunter, and then d'sappoarod in the bush. The whistle W is such as hoys produce with two fingers under tlieir tongue. Tho writer adds that several persons have come across the tracks of these creatures, and ho has met with one person avlio has soon them.
