RUMORED GOLD DISCOVERY.

IMPORTANT TO WANGANUI

The Hawke's Bay Herald of the 31st ult. has the following :—

In our last we referred to the fact of a prospecting company being then in course of formation, the object being simply, upon public more than private grounds, to institute a systematic search for gold, hut of course witii the chance of something turning; up. in the benefits of which the company would participate. While the object.is similar, the means is a decidea improvement upon the old plan of a subscription list. It is a somewhat singular coincidence that the locality intended more' particularly to be examined should be the Kaimanawa range, approaching it by Patea and ftgaruroro gorge, where it is well known indications of auriferous quartz have often been found; and that the list of shareholders had not long been, commenced before the arrival of the Phoebe, and intelligence received by that opportunity, gave the undertaking a different, and more prom is - j ing complexion. That intelligence, received through a trustworthy source, was that specimens of rich auriferor.s quartz, taken from the very locality indicated, had been sent to Wellington by one of the Macdonnell family j that the specimens had been seen by several, nnd were, without doubt, highly auriferous, that the discoverer had kept the matter as quiet as possible, but was understood to be intending to claim the reward for a payable goldfield offered by the Provincial Government of Wellington. The spot where this discovery has been made is well known to several gentlemen in jNapier, by whom the reef in question has been seen cropping out in more than one place. It is near the homestead of the Iviessrs Birch at Patea, and, although the road is rough, ?t is perfectly acces-

sible from JN^pier, piefMeslre Birch h&ving packed ftheiFiiupp^ horn, iind their wool >tof thS^j t<>wh—preferring ittoiiny other route to market. And; it could'!)©" greatly improved at a comparatively small outlay.' - ;, --~-..,.,. ,_ ; _ This news, yre need not add ? gave a great impetus to the formation of the. proposed company. The shares were rapidly taken;"acid the list is now nearly filled, A meeting of shareholders is convened for Thursday next—to be followed, we trust, by IMMKDIATE ACTU N. Now is the golden opportunity, which neither the settlors of Havvke's Bay nor the inhabitants of Napier can'afford to neglect, ! :l
