The following telegraphic items have been received per Alhambra :—* The next largest diamond in the world—the great half-pound diamond —has turned out to be no diamond, but a water-worn long-exposed pebble of rock crystal.
Mr Hunt, the manager of the Australian Company, has arrived in Sydney with a bag contain--110 diamonds, some of which are very fine stones.
A fine diamond has been found at Burangong. Clarke, of the Varieties, is to be tried for the murder of his wife. The coroner's jury brought in a verdict of "manslaughter," but the Government would not accept, it and indict him on a charge of murder. Power has been sentenced to death for the Windsor Gaol murder.
The failure is announced at Sydney of Messrs. Joseph Kolm and Co., dealers in fancy goods, in Hunterstreet.
The estimated liabilities, including the English creditors, are £40,000, and the assets, £25,000. They have convened a meeting of their creditors for Thursday. (Messrs Kohn and Co. is the firm which offered to negotiate a loan for the New South. Wales Govei'nment some year or two ago for £3,000,000.) Mr Kruger, the contractor, and once a magistrate of Adelaide, has been convicted of embezzlement.
The Adelaide Government have consented to give the unemployed work, and have agreed to pay wages equivalent to 3s per day. The men are to be engaged stone-breaking. Not more than sixty of the unemployed have accepted to work. A bill has been introduced at Adelaide to restrict the importation of all lucifers to those known as the safety matches, that will not strike except upon a prepared surface. The intention is to reduce the risk of fires.
