Correspondence.

THE WANGANUI BRID&E,

TO THE EDITOR OP THE tVENING HERALD. Wanganui, Aug. 31, 1869. biR, —I was much surprised to see a letter in your paper,- from a correspondent signing himself " Free Navigation," saying the proposed site was a bad one. lam not much used to newspaper writing, but I felt it a duty to contradict it. I think-the place at the foot of the Avenue is a good one. The bridge if put there would make the town look very pretty, and besides it would be wrong to put it anywhere else after promising the people near it that it should go there. - I will not try to follow your correspondent in what he says, because I am sure he lives up the river, and that's the reason he wants the bridge there. Some of the things he says are not true, for instance, why could not vessels go through the bridge if they want to. It was decided a long tune ago where the bridge was to go, and what right have a few people, because they have land tip the river, to try and prevent it. The market-square is a bad place for many reasons. lam not going to say more, but I hope, Mr Editor, you will not listen to the silly, cries of people who •■■try to prevent our having the bridge when there's a. chance of having the money.—^l am, &ci', A Townsman. ,
