PATEA.
A party of gentlemen rode through to Wang-anni'-to-day, li.avinj» left Patea about 2" o'clock this morning. The Tarannki overland mail arrived at Patea on the 31st December, bringing papers of the previous Saturday. The Taranaki tribe have declared for peace The chief Te Whit.i, amongst other reasons, says that when the Taranaki tribes were in trouble and wanted -assistance Titoko stood aloof j that they ,are, agreeable to the confiscation of the lands if "the present boundaries are not interfered with;' and that they cannot afford to go to war at present. Some, settlers came in from Wairoa yesterday ; all well there ; no news. Major Cumming-'s house, above the .camp at Patea, was burned down, on the night of Tuesday last— said to have, been £?ed by the rebels, but this statement is open to question.
