Fine Arts. —A scheme for the estabj lishment of a Fine Arts Exhibition in Dunedin, has been started. * Special Lodge Meeting.—Members of the M.U. are reminded of the special lodge to-night, on business of importance, as specified in the advertisement. The s.s. Waipara.—The Charleston Herald states that the steamer Waipara is expected to take up the trade between Westport, Charleston, Brighton, and (Ireymouth, in a few weeks. \I'HE Tjilegraph.— The Government hse asked for £7000 for a telegraph betweeen Wellington and Wanganui. The money. Avill no doubt be voted, and the work proceeded with at once. Maori Stronghold.—We have been informed by one of the Force well acquainted with the localities that the name of the stronghold of the Maoris beyond Te Ngutu o te Manu is not Pungarehu, as is stated in our last issue, as that place was destroyed on the first expedition made by Lieut. Col. McDonnell. In fact, the name of this formidable pa is not known, and we have only the intelligence supplied by some friendly natives to go upon, as to its strength and position. Fire.—A fire broke, out this morning at half-past 5 o'clock in the house of Mr Kylus, cabinet maker, Victoria Avenue. The Captain and some members of the fire brigade were quickly on the spot, but it was found impossible to save the building, which was burnt to the ground. The fire caught the workshop of Mr Wood, and destroyed it also. The house of Mr Hill, baker, was only saved through the exertions of the brigade and some others, arid but for a tank of water, which was close at hand, human efforts would not have prevented it from sharing the same fate as the house of Mr E3'lus. The fire is supposed to have originated through a large crack in the chimney, which was badly built. It is a fortunate circumstance that there was very little wind at the time, or the damage might have been considerably greater.
