(PKll UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION) TniAiir, November 23. A fire broke out last evening in the old Presbyterian Church, which was used as a store-house. A quantity of old seats were burnt, but the furniture and other goods were got out. Very little damage was done to the building, the flames being soon got under. Christchurch, November 25. The Mayor has invited Sir Julius Vogel to a banquet, to give his constitents an opportunity to meet him. A reply has been recived accepting the invitation, and stating that it was his intention to visit Christchurch on his return from the Hot Lakes. At an inquest yesterday, on a body found hi Lyttelton harbor on Friday, it was identified as that of Thomas MeClcary, laborer, of Christchurch, who left his home ten days ago. He has leased Grip Lodge to G. G. Stead for rive years. I)r>;i:i>!x, November 25. A four-roomed cottage at Roslyri was burnt down on Sunday morning. It was owned by A. Gilmour, and was insured for £BO in the Victoria Co. A narrow escape from a boating fatality occurred in the harbor, within a mile or so of this city, on Saturday evening. Doctors M'Donald and Colquohoun s and Mr H. Fulton, were outsailing, when the boom of the sail knocked Dr M'Donald overboard. Happily he could swim, and the boat being got round, a rope was thrown to him, but the vessel was travelling so fast the rope dragged him under water, and he had to let go. Dr Culquhoun then jumped overboard with a rope, but Dr M'Donald having been 15 minutes in the water, was just succumbing, when a rope was sent from the shore and readied him, and he was saved when almost at his last gasp. Dr Colnuohmm was subsequently pulled into the boat in safety. Hawbka, November 25. Robert Roskill, railway station-master at Nurmanby, has been arrested for embezzlement. Auckland, November 25. A correspondent writes to the Colonist that he can positively state that the three masted schooner Osprey arrived at Auckland in July, 1848, with a detachment of soldiers from Hobart. The troops consisted of the 58th and 65th Regiments, and were under the command of Lieut. Barglegab. of the 65th. The writer was on board the vessel himself.
