BULLER COUNTY COUNCIL.

Th' ordinary Council meeting was held yestt lay, all members being present. CORRESPONDENCE. From C. Bnrley, Junction, asking compensation owing to the new road up to the Alpine directing the traffic from her accommodation Louse. After some discus-

sion, during which it was agreed that there was no claim on the Council for damages, the letter was received.

From C. Croawell, complaining of alleged tyrranical and unjust conduct of the Rood Overseer towards himself, and quoting instances. Or Walker proposed and the Chairman seconded—" That a committee consisting of the Chairman, Cra Stitt, Fennell, Powell, and the mover be appointed to enquire into the matter and report at 4 p.m." Carried.

From F. Powell also complaining of the manner in which the Overseer had treated the maintenance contractors. Ordered to be dealt with in a similar manner as the previous one, as also any other letters on the same subject. From D. Molloy, Charleston, asking the County to take over and improve a pack-track lie had constructed. Referred to the Overseer for report.

From Jas Howard, Westport, offering £IOO for the right of the Nine-mile Ferry° and agreeing to take punt and appliances at valuation. Held over until the matter of McLeod's protection is settled. From C. H. Webb-Bowen, asking for authority for payment of Licensing Committee men, as resolved at the several meetings. Held over.

From a number of petitioners, praying for the construction of a track from the Borough boundary to Sergeant's Hill, parallel with the railway line. Ordered to be received and dealt with at next meeting. From W. McNairn, Ngakawhau, asking that license fee should be remitted on condition of keeping the ferry. The question of ferries generally was discussed, and it was ultimately resolved to refer the matters to Crs Stitt, McPadden, the Chairman, and the mover as a committee, to report at the present meeting. From Karamea petitioners, asking for the construction of several small tracks. Received and held over. From Messrs Munson, Falla, Suisted, and Morris, Wareatea North ratepayers, asking for the construction of a culvert at the end of Brougham street. Cr Brown proposed that the work be done at a cost not to exceed £5. The Chairman proposed an amendment—That the Overseer report at the next meeting. The matter was lengthily discussed, and the amendment was carried. From the Chairman, Southland County Council, re financial position of Counties, and asking co-operation. Received. From the Chairman Waimangaroa School Committee, drawing attention to the approach to School being blocked by a stone wall erected by the contractors for the new track.—Upon the motion of Cr Brown it was resolved that the Overseer attend to the matter at once.-—Cr Stitt made some remarks in complaint of the conduct of the Overseer in not passing the Waimangaroa track when it was finished.—Cr Savage showed that the Overseer's time was fully engaged in other parts of the County.—Cr Brown said that there were a great many complaints against the Overseer, but that they should be brought before the Council in a proper form. From Charleston ratepayers asking for the making of a track from the Buller road to Second Bay, Charleston, and showing that the work had been previously authorised and laid oft', but no tenders had been called.—Cr Walker did not know why this work had not been gone on with, and also complained that work ordered at Nile Bend had not been done. He moved that the tenders be called for the work at oi:ce. Cr Stitt seconded.—The Chairman thought they should not enter into new works when they had no money to pay for them.—Cr Savage advocated going on with the work, as it had been so long ordered. Cr Walker's motion was carried. The Council then adjourned until 2 p. m.
