Simon, master, now in the river, is the first vessel that has entered this port under the North German Hag. She was built in 1879, and is a usefid craft of 159 tons register. Her last three trips were from Batavia to Mauritius, then to Dunedin, and on here. She brings a small general cargo, in excellent order, the greater portion of which is for up-country people. Captain Simon (who is part owner of the Tarmow) reports leaving Dunedin on the 12th ultimo, experiencing light and variable winds until making the Buller to-day. She was towed in by the Dispatch. Mr Smith (who took the position of Chief Officer of the s.s. Ladybird temporarily) will resume his former situation aboard the tug Dispatch. Mr Lawton, who has been Second Officer of the Ladybird since she has been running under the W.C.C.'s flag, takes the Chief Otticership. Mr Lawton holds a master's certificate, and traded to the West Coast for many years in command of sailing vessels. His experience of the sea commenced in 1853. Mr Lawton is to be congratulated upon his promotion, as is the Company upon commanding the services of so worthy an officer. Owing to the moon in the perigee and new moon occurring in each month, within a very short interval of time, the tides that follow the new moon will bo unusually high, especially that of March 20th, 21st, and 22nd.—Nautical Magazine. Captain Leys, of the Wallabi, reports speaking a collier from Newcastle to Lyttelton. He could not make out the name clearly, but it was something like " Alasta." The Captain wished to be reported. There are now five other vessels on the voyage from Newcastle to Lyttelton. They will load with grain. The repairs to the Wallace are now almost completed, and it is expected that she will resume running on Saturday next, on which day she leaves for Wanganui.— Nelson Colonist.
