THE ROAD TO MOKIHINUI REEFS.
(to the EDITOR.) Sir,-—I would most earnestly impress on the minds of reefers and others the difficulties they have to contend with on the route to Mokihinui reefs at present. Firstly, the road to the Halcyon and adjoining reefs is impassable. Portion of this road is at present under contract, viz., to the junction of the Rough and Tillable track. The Road Overseer never seems to see anything in regard to roads in these outlying districts, and it is high time there should be a change for the better in either Overseer or County Chairman. Now, sir, I fail to see which of these men is boss. lam credibly informed by a local Councillor that the Road Overseer has instructions to proceed to the Mokihinui district to look after the interests of the ratepayers and others. And what do we find ? That he persistently declines to obey his instructions. When the Overseer writes those elaborate specifications for County works there his duties seem to cease to exist, with the exception of issuing an order for payment quarterly. Now as the order made to renew the chair fixtures crossing the Mokihinui to Rough and Tumble has not been complied with, and the chair at present in break neck condition, I have come to the conclusion as well as others that T. Thompson, Road Overseer, is master, and why go to the expense of the County Chairman ? Why not amalgamate the offices, so that any real friend tendering for any of these contracts need do no more than tender for said contract and then apply for the quarterly dividend ? If this state of things is permitted to exist any longer, we will apply to our much respected Warden for redress of our grievances.—l am, &c, Traveller.
