BILLS OF EXCHANGE.
Attention is called to the provisions! of Clause 55 of "The Stamp Act, 1875," now in force, which refers to, the duties on bill of exchange. The clause provides that when adhesive stamps are used to denote the payment of such stamp duties, the maker or drawer in the case of promissory notes and the acceptor in the case of bills of exchange, shall at time of drawing or acceptance, so sigu his name that part of his signature shall be on the left side of the stamp, part on the stamp itself, and part on the right side ; in fact it- is to be written continuously across the stamp, as if the stamp were part of the paper. In def;iult..of this will be of no avail. In the case of promissory notes, the stamp is to be affixed by the maker or drawer, and in bills of exchange by the acceptor. Any failure on their part to affix and cancel'such stamps iu the manner indicated involves a penalty of £50.
