WESTPORT SCHOOL.

EXAMINATION. The annual examination of pupils of the "Westport School took place on Friday at 10 o'clock. The Education Committee requested the co-operation of Messrs Thorpe, Munro, and Eeid, in the examination of the various classes, and the large number of 84 children were present. To those gentlemen who took part in former examinations, the improvement of the scholars of the upper classes, was particularly marked ; three or four of the boys, especially, being exceedingly proficient in arithmetic, history, and writing. After an examination of two hours in the various branches taught, Mr Eeid, in the name of the Education Committee and the teachers, awarded the following prizes to the children in the several classes:— Ist CLASS. Thomas Field, for greatest proficiency, Ist prize ; John Munro, 2nd prize; Louisa Bierstofi', 3rd prize. F. D. Wmstanley, Thomas Easton, Emma Stephenson, were awarded prizes for general proficiency and good conduct. 2nd class. Thomas Fleming, Ist prize ; Eliza Smyrk, 2nd prize. 3rd class. Kate Blyth, Ist prize ; Minnie King, 2nd prize; Emily M'Kae, 3rd prize. 4th CLASS. Eichard Pickering, Ist Prize; Robert Grant, 2nd prize. sth CLASS. Jessie King, Ist prize; Mary Ann Byrne, 2nd, prize ; Mary M'lntye, 3rd prize. 6th CLASS. Joseph Munro, Jessie M'Rae, Chas. Craddock, and Elisabeth M'Farlane were awarded prizes for their progress. Mr Munro then addressed a few words to the scholars, commenting upon the progress made and specially noticing the good order and discipline under which the school seemed to be conducted; acquainting the young folks that the Christmas holidays would last for one month ; after which they gave three cheers for their teachers, Mr and Mrs Fraser, and the day's proceedings were terminated shortly after by a general distribution of confectionery, and by 81 children standing in front of the school to have their photographs taken, with that of the school house.
