The s.s. Somersetshire arrived at Melbourne from London after a passage of GO days; and the schooner Mary from Westport. Sailed: The schooner Io for Westport. The schooner Nil Desperandum is reported missing, and is supposed to havo been lost off Wilson's Prouion tory. The barque Summer Cloud has been wrecked at Cape St. George. The crew were saved. GENEBAL SUMMARY. Melbourne, Oct. 17. Macpberson, irou merchant, has been elected Mayor of Melbourne. The Government have resolved to try G. 11. Supple for shootiug Smith with intent to kill. There is very littlo betting upon the approaching Melbourne Cup. Croydon maintains the call at 5 to 1; Warrior is firmly supported at G to 1. and Tim Whiffier is quoted at 8 to 1. Criminal proceedings have been instituted against C. E. Jones on a charge of wilful perjury. A great fire has occurred in Ryrie-st Geelong, destroying property valued at £3OOO. Davis's premises and Clanchy's hotel havo been burnt to the ground. Bread stuffs are dull at previous quotations. Sydney, Oct. 16th.

The Hon Mr Parkes, Colonial Treasurer, has resigned, having sequestrated his estate. The liabilities are estimated at £36,000. A heavy gale and floods are reported, hut without loss of life or serious casualties.

Another earthquake has taken place in the Macleay District. The race for the championship between Hewitt, the English runner, and Harris, the Australian champion, has resulted in a hardly won victory for Hewitt.
