The recent visit of the Galatea to Wellington has afforded an opportunity of explaining the damaging charges that were made against certain officers of that vessel in respect of nonpayment of their washerwomen. The " Post" explains the matter thus : "One woman obtained all the officers' linen to wash, after repeated cautions i to her that she had better not take all unless she could complete the work within a certain time. The day arrived for the departure of the Galatea, and there was no appearance on board of either the washerwoman or the clothes. Sailor after sailor was despatched to find the woman and the clothes, but without success; and- at length the Galatea having already been detained five hours after her time, a party of marines were sent after the clothes, and they were taken on board, some washed, some wet, some rough-dried, many not even touched, in one confused bundle. They were piled up on deck, and, after two men had spent six hours over them, they were sorted, and it was found that every officer but two was minus a considerable quantity" Those two were his Royal Highness and a lieutenant, and these paid their bills; the others, of course, objected on the ground of their loss. One unfortunate mau found himself minus no less than three dozen shirts."

One of our boys had been visiting at his Uncle Ben's. He said while there his uncle made a scarecrow so natural, it not only scared off every crow that saw it, but one crow was so frightened, that he turned white in the face, went, and brought back the corn which he had stolen three days before.
