THE WARDENS' CONFERENCE.
At the recent conference of the Wardens of the Nelson South-West G-oldfields at Cohden, a few alterations in the Rules were agreed to, and the Superintendent will be moved to bring them at once into force. The proposed amendments are for the most part intended to suit the present condition of the Goldfields by facilitatiag the working of ground which is not payable in ordinary claims. With this view it is proposed that double ground may be given where the circumstances render it expedient, that the number of men required to work an extended claim be reduced, and that frontage claims may be held until gold is struck, no matter whether the claim is worked by a tunnel or otherwise. Provision is also made for enabling the Warden more easily to grant protection to business sites and other claims. There are also one or two further regulations relating to the forfeiture and assignment of mining leases, and to tho working of agricultural leases which prove auriferous. It is hoped that the effect of the proposed alterations, if they become law, will be to benefit the miner, and to facilitate the working of our goldfields, in which case they will present a contrast to the new mining rules of the County of Westland, which are causing great complaint amongst the miners.
