The steamer Kennedy arrived here from Nelson on Tuesday, at 5.30 p.m., and sailed yesterday evening for Hokitika. She encountered the full force of the north-easterly gale of Monday night, but the wind, being in a favorable direction, did not protract her passage.
The schooners Jane Elkin and Three Friends sailed on Tuesday, the former for Greymouth, where she will load whh coal and proceed to Hokitika, and the latter for Charleston.
The brigantine Mary, one of Messrs Spence Bros, and Co.'s line of vessels, arrived in the roadstead on Tuesday from Melbourne. She sailed from that port on the 27th ult., and made a good passage of ten days. She will probably be towed in by the p.s. Lioness this morning, on her arrival from Hokitika. The p.s. Charles Edward appears to have got into a position of difficulty on her last visit to the Grey. While crossing the bar she had a narrow escape from a pile-up on the beach, which nothing but the coolness, presence of mind, and seamanship of Captain Holmes prevented. She had crossed the break and was entering the river, when one of the connecting rods of the rudder-chains broke. She ran on until she touched the north spit, was then backed full speed until she touched the south spit, when the jib was got on her, and the current of the river catching her bow sho came round and steamed out to sea, while the tiller was being shipped. She then returned, crossed the bar, and arrived safely at the wharf. The passengers, who came on deck at the time of the accident, speak highly of the manner in which Captain Holmes handled his vessel. The ship Halcione. which arrived at Wellington last week, had one of her crew, John Kearsay, washed overboard the night before reaching port. She h.is brought some valuable live stock for Nelson Province. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. ARRIVALS. Wellington.—Sept. G —Gothenburg, from Lyttelton. DEPARTURES. Wellington.—Sept. 7 —Gothenburg, for Nelson.
