AUCKLAND.

John George well known in Auckland as a money-lender, died at the Lunatic Asyluin on the 7th instant. A man, named John Wallis, died in the Thames Hospital on the Bth instant, from injuries alleged to have been received in an affray with a man named Johnstone. The latter is in custody. An inquest has been held on the body of John Windsor who was found dead in the watch-house, Shortland. The jury fouml "that deceased died from diseases of the heart and brail, and that death was accelerated by cold, drink, and want." An extensive landslip occurred on the Moanatairi during the heavy rain, which destroyed two cottages, the occupants of which fortunately were not in at the time. Judge Rogan returned to Auckland from the Chatham Islands by the Colonial Government schooner Edith, on the 12th instant. He proceeded by her to the island, and during his stay there he has been busily engaged holding sittings of the Native Lands' Court. A small parcel of gold, weighing 7ozs. 2d\vts., the result of a crushing of a few pounds of specimens from a Coroinandel claim, has been lodged in the Bank of New Zealand. The dramatic season of the Theatre Royal, Auckland, is announced to commence shortly, under the management of Miss Joey Gougenheim, the well known and accomplished actress. The number of births, deaths, and marriages registered at the Thames for the 12 months ended 30th of June was as follows :—Births, 475 ; deaths, 179; marriages, 82.
