NELSON SHARE REPORT. Mr H.'J. L. Augarde, Nelson, in his share report for the week ended July 2nd, states that the disposition has been to sell, but owing to the absence of speculation there have been but few transactions. Culliford shares £1 17s 6d paid, particularly inactive ; Perseverance shares £1 10s paid, a few transactions at 255. Pioneer £6 paid, Lucky Hit £7 10s paid, Masonic £lO 10s paid, and Commercial £ls paid, show particular inactivity. In consequence of no news of any importance having come to hand the markets have not rallied, but remain dull and inactive. It is quite evident that the fate of many of our mines hangs on t'e future operations of the Perseverance Company ; it being the first at ■work, and our community being new to mining investment, they naturally look to this mine as a sample, and are disposed to judge others by its standard. This style of reasoning is somewhat fallacious, but time and experience are required to remedy it. If the directors of the Culliford reef would only be more energetic and push the business, with regard to obtaining machinery, and so get a mine to work that it is believed would pay well, it would greatly relieve the market. There appears to be machinery for sale at the Thames, could not a battery be purchased and landed here at less cost than would be involved in obtaining it from Melbourne ? It is quite necessary that something like action should be taken, and if a battery were landed here, the Government would have an incentive to make roads, and thus lessen the evils arising from procrastination.
